Space for the performance, recording and listening of music, education and worship, all share the need for exceptional architectural and room acoustics design. This is a complex issue, related to the physical, spatial, surface and material aspects of the environment acting in harmony with the intended use. Since this is sometimes a misunderstood opportunity in architecture, there is need to differentiate between room acoustics and noise control.

Room acoustics refers to the ambient qualities of a give room or space. Noise control is the effective isolation of unwanted disturbance. In new buildings, it is best to consider acoustical design at the earliest phases of design. For room acoustics, the first consideration is the mathematical proportions and volume of the space. A good listening environment is achieved by providing wanted reflections in combination with diffusion and absorption to create the desired reverberation time. Isolation of unwanted disturbance begins with proximity, first programmatically, second by means of detailed separation. The "recording studio" is a great example of the ideal, as isolation is a mandate, and performance occurs in a variety of ambient conditions; "dry" to "live".

Within existing buildings, improving isolation may offer greater challenge, but the ambient quality of any room can see dramatic improvement with thoughtful design. Often in places of assembly, the addition of microphone and amplification is perceived as the solution. If the room behaves poorly to begin with, amplification only adds to the problem. When proportions or geometry for the intended use are poor, alteration to this is essential, as merely adding surface treatments will not effectively deal with standing waves, compound reflections or other mathematical certainties. These spaces may be re-configured, changing the geometry without need for abandonment or replacement. With the introduction of better room shape and volume, then surface or suspended control measures are introduced, allowing the required articulation. There are also many opportunities within existing facilities to make dramatic improvement during renovations and maintenance upgrades, without significant increase to the construction cost.
